This dictionary is part of a set with the Dictionnaire hindi-français (Hindi-French Dictionary) by the same author. Made for beginners, it contains about 10,000 entries. For each meaning from the French word, illustrated sentences are proposed. Each phrase is translated into Hindi. We realize that the word conveying the meaning in Hindi is often from another grammatical category than the French word used in the sentence. Learners of Hindi are also informed of the permissible uses of Hindi words that are translated into French. Illustrative sentences allow the learners to broaden their knowledge and experience of the syntax. The differences between the respective constructions of French and Hindi are highlighted and give valuable insight into the thought process of Hindi speakers. Finally, the interplay of grammatical categories around a shared etymological root can only open minds and build vocabulary.
Federica BOSCHETTI studied Hindi at INALCO and has a long practice of the language in the country. She is also the author of a Hindi-French Dictionary, first published by Éditions du Makar and taken up by the Asiathèque.
